Light Therapy in New Jersey

Did you know that facial light therapy originated in outer space? It began as a test by NASA to grow plants in zero gravity aboard the space shuttle. The light inspired cells to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP) fueling growth and function, including the production of collagen. Even wounds on astronauts healed quicker with the use of red light and higher levels of ATP.

What is Light Therapy?

Light Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that rejuvenates your skin by triggering your body’s natural cell processes, producing collagen and repairing skin tissues.

By going into the deeper layers of your skin, it helps minimize acne, decrease inflammation and redness, and treat fine lines and wrinkles and other issues like hyperpigmentation, spider veins, and sun damage. In producing collagen and elastin, light therapy tightens your skin to provide you with a glowing and youthful appearance.

Types of Light Wavelengths

Light therapy involves three major light wavelengths:

  • Blue light has antibacterial properties that are effective in the treatment of acne, eczema, and psoriasis, which can decrease oil production and prevent acne breakout.
  • Red light aids in repairing skin, especially for rosacea, enhances circulation, shrinks the appearance of pores, and decreases inflammation and redness.
  • Near infra-red light has the deepest absorbed wavelength, allowing it to smooth out lines and wrinkles, enhance elasticity, decrease pain and inflammation, and stimulate the healing of wounds and cystic acne.

FAQS

Am I a Candidate for Light Therapy?

If you are looking to improve your skin condition, whether it be acne scars, hyperpigmentation, lesions, spider veins or wrinkles, you are an excellent candidate for light therapy. You should be in good physical health and understand the realistic results from any light therapy procedure.

What are the results of Light Therapy?

Some patients experience smoother and younger-looking skin within four to eight weeks. The best results are often seen after 12 weeks.

How is the recovery for Light Therapy?

For the most part, your recovery is fairly straightforward. You will need to deal with dry skin as it heals and starts to peel off. Your skin may ooze and blister as well. If you have any swelling, you can use an ice pack to reduce it. It is not unusual to feel itchy for a few days following your treatment.

You can expect redness at the treated site for up to three months and pinkness for up to a year. Do not scratch at the crust that occurs; it can lead to scarring. What you can do is clean the treated site up to five times daily with a saline type of solution and apply protective skincare to speed up the healing of your skin. And, of course, use a good sunscreen formulated for sensitive skin.

What is the difference between Light Therapy and Laser treatments?

Light therapy rejuvenates your skin with a non-invasive and non-ablative red, blue and infrared light to treat acne, scar reduction, facial wrinkles, and other body tissues. Blue and red light can help activate photodynamic therapy (PDT). Light therapy can treat large areas faster than laser treatment and has a low heat-emitting property. It can be a safer and more effective and affordable alternative to laser treatment.

Light therapy and laser treatments can help deal with many of the same skin conditions. However, laser treatment is usually more painful with a longer recovery period. A laser can be more invasive and cause damage to viable tissue due to its high heat-emitting property. It is also limited in treating only specific types of skin.
